How the Formula Works

This calculator estimates how long it takes to charge a LiPo battery and how much power your charger needs.

Charge Current

Charge Current (A) = (Battery Capacity (mAh) / 1000) × Charge Rate (C)

The C-rate tells you the charge current as a multiple of battery capacity. 1C = standard safe charge, 2C = faster but more stressful on the battery.

Charge Time

Charge Time (hours) = Capacity (Ah) / Charge Current (A) × 1.2

The 1.2 factor (20%) accounts for:

  • Charger efficiency losses
  • Balance charging time (balancing cells takes extra time)
  • CV (constant voltage) phase at the end of charging

Charger Power

Charger Power (W) = Battery Voltage (V) × Charge Current (A)

This tells you the minimum wattage your charger must support.

Example

  • Battery: 2200 mAh, 14.8V (4S)
  • Charge Rate: 1C
Charge Current = (2200/1000) × 1 = 2.2 A
Charge Time    = 2.2 / 2.2 × 1.2 = 1.2 hours = 72 minutes
Charger Power  = 14.8 × 2.2 = 32.6 W

FAQs

1. What is a “C” rating for charging?
The C-rating for charging tells you how many times battery capacity you can safely charge at. 1C for a 2200mAh battery means charging at 2.2A. Most LiPos support 1C, many support 2C-5C with higher quality cells.

2. Can I charge LiPo batteries faster?
Higher C-rate charging (2C, 3C) reduces charge time but increases heat and battery wear. Only use C-rates the battery manufacturer explicitly supports.

3. Why does actual charge time take longer than calculated?
Balance charging adds 10-30% extra time as the charger balances individual cells. Also, the CV (constant voltage) phase slows down as the battery approaches full charge.

4. What wattage charger do I need?
Use the calculator to find charger power (watts). Add 20-50% headroom. For charging multiple batteries simultaneously, multiply by the number of batteries.

5. Is fast charging safe for LiPo batteries?
Only if the battery supports the C-rate. Fast charging increases internal heat, which degrades cells faster. For maximum battery life, stick to 1C.

6. Can I charge LiPo batteries unattended?
Never charge LiPo batteries unattended or on flammable surfaces. Always use a LiPo-safe bag or charging box.

7. What is storage voltage?
LiPo batteries should be stored at 3.8V per cell (storage voltage). This preserves cell health for long-term storage. Charge to full (4.2V/cell) just before flight.
