    The vastus intermedius is a deep muscle located in the quadriceps. It is responsible for knee extension and stability. The vastus intermedius is one of the four muscles that make up the quadriceps, which are located in the front of the thigh. The muscle is situated deep to the rectus femoris and superficial to the vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis muscles.
